About Sheryl
Sheryl Thomas qualified as a physiotherapist in 2009 with a MSc (Pre-reg) in Physiotherapy from the University of Southampton. Prior to this, in 2005 she completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences from the University of Exeter.
These two courses gave her an in-depth knowledge of Anatomy, Biomechanics of the body, Psychology, Well-Being, Public Health, Exercise Physiology, as well as a detailed medical knowledge.
Through her career she has had a broad variety of experience within Physiotherapy, which has enabled her to have expert skills in assessing and treating complex patients with successful and realistic results. She has a caring nature which helps her to relay information to clients and their families in an appropriate and reassuring manner. She has amazing skills in helping clients with communication difficulties, where they feel their voice is heard and expressed within their on-going care and rehabilitation needs.
From her experience, she has an understanding in sourcing and signposting, to help with care packages, buddy systems and financial issues.
The exercises and treatment programmes she designs are tailored to the unique needs of the individual and she facilitates the client to work towards an exercise or exercise programme so that it becomes achievable independently or with the support of family/friends/carers supporting the individual.
Through her love/passion of physiotherapy and the individual’s well-being that come under her care, she continues to educate herself through post-graduate courses, self-learning, research etc and has multiple tools to aid someone to recovery.
She has a special interest in Traumatic Brian Injury (TBI), Parkinson’s (PD) and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). She has a clear understanding of the complexity that Traumatic brain injury can display and she aims to give a holistic approach, so all areas that are affecting an individuals life are considered. She then integrates their needs, so that they can move forward in their rehabilitation, improve their independence which enables them to achieve their goals and aspirations. She has a good knowledge with complex seating needs, wheelchairs and equipment needs, including the technology that is available. She has done specialised courses with FES and in PD, including the Parkinson’s Warrior approach.
She gained a broad knowledge through completing various specialised rotations, including Musculoskeletal Outpatients, Orthopedics (Trauma and Elective), Respiratory, Care of the Elderly, Community Rehabilitation, Stroke Rehabilitation and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, before specialising her passion of Neurology.
Sheryl worked as Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist at a private Neurological and Behavioral Rehabilitation Hospital, which gave her a vast experience within Neurology.
